This weekend is my hometown's graduation. It's crazy to think that a little over two years ago I was standing in my white cap and gown ready to shake hands with my superintendent and officially becoming a Ballard High School Alumn. I would argue that I went to a fairly small school, though there were many schools around us that were much smaller than ours. I had 109 kids in my graduating class, and my school district was comprised of 4 towns. Being from a small community, I know there were some things I got to experience in high school that kids in large schools did not get to experience. I'm not talking about the head cheerleader dating the quarterback or knowing everyone's name. It's beyond that level of small town school. So to get to the point, here are some things you can only experience in small town high schools.
1. You knew your prom date since kindergarten.
2. You attended at least 15 grad parties your sophomore, junior, and senior year.
3. You had a cousin or other family member in your graduating class.
4. You were related to one of your teachers.
5. You knew the school parking lot had unofficial assigned parking spots with the seniors in the front and freshman in the back.
6. You knew which car in the parking lot belonged to who.
7. Half the school was gone the week one of the sports teams made state.
8. You babysat one of your teacher's kids quite frequently.
9. Your math teacher was also your football coach.
10. It was a big freaking deal when the town got a stoplight or new Casey's General Store.
11. You were able to be on the varsity team for a different sport each season.
12. You knew exactly who the crazy fan parents in the stand belonged to.
13. Your Friday night entertainment was determined by what sport was playing in that season.
14. You spent more time at school and doing school activities then you spent at home.
15. You know exactly what college each one of your classmates attended.
16. You owned more clothing with your school colors than any other colors.
17. When someone in your school became seriously sick or hurt, everyone rallied together to show support.
18. The band was basically 1/3 to 1/2 of your school.
19. Your senior year was focused on doing as much together as a class as possible.
20. One night a week was a designated "church night" and the school did not schedule ANYTHING on that night.
Keeping this short and simple. Congrats to the class of 2015!
