To my mentor the past 4 years,
As I reflect on the past 4 years and look forward to the future, there is one thing I have to do before I walk off this campus for good. It's probably something I should've done sooner or more often, but hey late is better than never. What I need to do is to simply say thank-you.
Thank-you for the many office hours spent figuring out my "plans". The plans that the naïve freshman thought were set in stone from day one that would actually change about a hundred times between then an now. When the plans never played out perfectly that usually meant minor (ok sometimes major) freak outs. Nevertheless, you'd always talk me down from the ledge and help me adapt to the changes. Thank-you for keeping me sane and showing me that there are different paths to take to success.
Thank-you for the sometimes endless vent sessions. Boys, roommates, tough classes, unfair professors, overprotective parents, siblings, jobs you name it we probably talked about it. You were always willing to listen and not afraid to offer your two cents. Sometimes a third party perspective was needed to see things clearly and you never said no. Thank-you for not passing judgement on my petty problems and keeping me from going off on somebody.
Thank-you for pushing me to reach my full potential. Whether it was recommending certain classes over the easy ones or encouraging me to take that internship a thousand miles from home, both were attempted and conquered thanks to your advice. I may not have always liked the ideas at the time, but they made me a stronger, more independent person. Thank-you for pushing me outside of my comfort zone and helping me build my self confidence and worth.
It never ceased to amaze me how often you went above and beyond the call of duty for not only me but dozens of other students that came knocking on your office door. You would always treat us like one of your own. You served the role of educator, parent, therapist, and life coach. It may not have always shown but I truly did appreciate everything you did and it made a huge impact on my collegiate career. To keep it short, thank-you for going beyond your job description and making college just a little bit easier.
With Sincere Thanks,
The Alumni
PS: Don't be surprised if you get vent e-mails/texts asking for advice even after I graduate.
