1. We are the highest low maintenance girls you will ever meet. Yes our typical attire is jeans and a t-shirt, but don't be deceived. Those jeans probably say Rock Revival, Cruel Girl, Big Star, 7s, or another brand along those lines. And that t-shirt? Ya it's probably from the local western boutique. Of course we wear boots/Sperry's/Twisted X too. Don't forget the Polo baseball cap to complete the ensemble. While we may rely heavily on sporting our favorite brands, they usually are accented with some dirt or manure at some point in the day, which leads to expectation #2...
2. We sometimes smell. Bad. We aren't afraid to get dirty, and when you're working with animals you're going to get dirty. Whether it be sweat, dirt, manure, hay, or some other bodily fluid our livestock decided to release on us, we will smell like it for the rest of the day. Yes we shower more often than the normal female, but sometimes when you're in a hurry, you go into public smelling like pig. Sometimes we don't even notice and sometimes we just don't care. If you think that we stink or that we are dirty, get over it. We work hard and that rarely comes without a price.
3. We will have more phone conversations with our dad than we will with you. It's not that we don't want to talk to you. We just want to make sure everything is running smoothly at home. When the favorite heifer is calving, you can bet we will be on the phone for HOURS with our dad to make sure that calf gets on the ground and gets up and moving. It's not that we don't trust our dad, it's just that from time to time he needs checked up on. We will call you too, but don't get jealous if it only lasts for a solid 5 minutes. We get to see you everyday. We don't get to see the farm everyday.
4. We love our animals just as much, if not more than you. It's not that they make us happier (usually) but we have just loved them longer. We will never forget when we got our first bottle calf or lamb, or how many hours we spent feeding marshmallows to our barrows. We have been around them for years. At one point in time, they were our babies, literally. We have had just as many ups and downs with them as we have had with you. If one gets hurt or sick, you bet we are going to cancel date night until things get taken care of. It's just in our nature to put them first. Yes the will be fed before you are. They are not capable of feeding themselves, but you are more than qualified to make your own sandwich. That's just how it is.
5. The animals and us are a package deal. You will not see one without the other. They are what we grew up with and what we want our kids to grow up with. The life lessons you can learn from caring for livestock are endless and we want to share that with the next generation. Our dream house really isn't that fancy, but our dream barn is second to none. The urban life just won't fly with us and there is little you can do to change our mind. We are just as stubborn as our animals, if not more so. If you foresee this going long term, you better be picking out an acreage while you're picking out a ring.
Livestock girls are a breed all our own. We have a natural caring and gentle personality, along with a strong work ethic and sense of responsibility. We have a tendency to put others first, human or nonhuman, and that's just something we are raised with. A livestock girl is not your traditional "country" girl. We are a million times better as long as you can comply to our expectations ;)
