Like many college girls I have a closer relationship with Netflix than I have had with many men. I indulge into some of my favorite reality show reruns such as Dance Moms, Bridezillas, and pretty much any reality show that makes me feel better about my life and a little bit classier. However, I also have developed a secret obsession with Documentaries. You wouldn't think that documentaries would be the top choice for many 20-something women, but I am enticed. So much show that I decided to share with you some of my favorites and not so favorites so that maybe you can branch out of your comfort zone too. Being the pig-obsessed person that I am, I rated the movies with pork chops from a scale from 1-5 chops. Because stars are just overrated.
Black Fish (3 chops): This is the notorious documentary that exhibits the "evils" behind Sea World. From an entertainment stand point, this movie had my attention captured the entire time and really made me think. I do believe it does point out some things wrong with the Sea World system, BUT I do question some of the facts brought up, which brought down the Chop rating some. Controversial, but definitely worth the watch.
Nicky's Family (5 chops): One thing to know about me is that I am obsessed with learning more about World War II and the Holocaust. This documentary is about a British man who helped hundreds of Jewish Children out of Czechoslovakia before the Nazi Invasions. It really taught me something about the Holocaust that I had never learned about in school. I cried a lot while watching this documentary, and I know you will too, but in a good way. If you have any interest in World War II history I would highly recommend this movie!
Fame High (2 chops): If you enjoy watching semi-talented children being followed around by a film crew while their parents push them into fame so they can become their meal tickets, then you'll enjoy this documentary more than I did. Fame High follows the students of a famous High School in LA that pretty much teaches kids how to try to be stars in pop culture. I say try because the kids they follow in the movie really don't ever get an actual education and spend a lot of their lives at dead end auditions. Maybe I'm just a little jealous because I have zero talent outside of a barn, but I was sincerely unimpressed with this movie.
I Know that Voice (1 chop): At first I thought the idea of this documentary would be very interesting and surprising. I was sadly mistaken. This documentary interviews people who do voices for cartoons and that's about it. It seemed to drag on way too long, and honestly I didn't watch more than the first hour because I got bored and didn't see what the purpose was. It didn't make me feel anything. Not one I would recommend.
Steal a Pencil for Me (4 Chops): Yes, another Holocaust themed Documentary. This one follows a Jewish couple's story from when their affections bloomed and survived in the midst of a concentration camp. Talk about proof of true love and fate, this story is it. I didn't cry or feel sad at all while watching this documentary. It was definitely a feel good documentary on the Holocaust, if that is possible. If you aren't a romantic then you might find this a little cheesy, but I absolutely loved it and the old couple was just so damn cute!
The Dark Matter of Love (3.5 Chops): I have always liked the idea of adoption, and have seriously considered adopting in the future (way into the future). If you're on the same boat, I would definitely watch this documentary. This documentary follows the story of a family who went from having one child to four after they adopted another daughter and twin boys from Russia. What I liked best is that it wasn't all kittens and butterflies. It showed the real struggles and tribulations this family went through, and didn't make it look like the most amazing thing ever. Now, if these kids ever see this documentary about them, they might get a little hurt or angry at some of the stuff their parents said about them. There are also random scientific blurbs which are pretty boring. Still, I would recommend this movie to anybody interested in the adoption process.
This is not all the documentaries I have watched, nor have I stopped watching documentaries. I just wanted to keep this first list short and sweet so you can find some spare time to watch a few of these yourselves. Perhaps when you're supposed to be studying for an Anatomy and Phsyiology Exam like I did! More Chop ratings to come in the future!
