After a solid 23 hours at home between my flight into Iowa from Asia and my flight out of Iowa to the east coast, I finally made the move to DC. Thankfully my mama joined me for a long weekend, which I am extremely grateful for. We arrived mid-morning on Saturday and honestly all I did was sleep all day after moving into my new apartment thanks to jet-lag. Sunday we got a little more adventurous and took the metro to Target in the morning and thus checking off the first item off of my DC Intern Bucket List (#29). We then decided to take a taxi to Georgetown for lunch and some cupcakes. We ate at a famous local restaurant called Clyde's, which wasn't too bad. After lunch, we ventured to the line at Georgetown Cupcakes (or DC cupcakes as they were known on TLC), which luckily wasn't as long as we were anticipating. With Sunday's adventures we were able to check off item #5 and #25 off the DC Intern Bucket List.
Between Sunday and Monday we also had a not-so-pleasant adventure with Safeway grocery delivery services. Long story short, my groceries were 19 hours late and without my milk. Moral of the story: don't order online groceries in DC on Memorial Day Weekend when half the roads are closed. After multiple phone calls to customer service, $43 dollars in free groceries and free delivery, and one actual delivery later we were able to spend our Monday afternoon doing DC touristy things. We took the metro to Arlington National Cemetery for Memorial Day (bucket list item #3) It was much busier than normal which was expected, so I was fortunate enough that I had a wonderful mother that pre-ordered tour bus tickets while we were waiting for groceries. I would definitely recommend taking a tour bus in Arlington since it's a very big area and would be a lot of hiking up and down hills. We saw JFKs grave and watched the Changing of the Guards while on our tour. After the tour, we hopped back on the metro and since jet-lag is still controlling my life, I was asleep by 7:30.
Short post for a long weekend, but I'm sure as the summer goes on and the jet-lag wears off, I'll be able to experience a lot more adventures during the weekends. As for now, it's off to the first day of work!
