Hard to believe I've been in this city for about 9 days now and survived my first week of work. To keep things about work short my office is only a 20 minute walk from my apartment and I get to pass the Library of Congress, Jefferson Building, Capitol, and the Senate House all on my way so it's a pretty scenic route.
On Friday, one of my close friends Tayler arrived and will be staying the rest of the summer for her internship, which really helped relieve some of the homesickness that was creeping up on me. On Saturday, our first stop was the National Zoo. I would highly rrecommend the zoo to anyone. It sits on about 160 acres, and has a wide array of animals on display. What I thought was neat was the scenery made you feel like you were in the jungle more than a zoo. However, it was huge (much bigger than Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines) so I would suggest to anyone wanting to go to bring comfortable walking shoes and some snacks. My highlight of the trip was seeing the elephants which cross item #1 off the Intern Bucket List!
Affer the zoo, we got some frozen yogurt then walked to the National Cathedral. I have been there before, but I had forgotten just how big it was. It was beautiful to say the least, and has a college and a school attached to it. Unfortunately we didn't get to go in because one of the schools was having graduation, which we didn't realize until we were walking amongst a crowd of preppyCatholic boys and their parents taking a bunch of pictures. Awko-taco moments.
That at night we had dinner at Co-Co which is in downtown DC. Co-Co is known for having something chocolate related in every single dish. It was pretty good but not a pretty penny. Good experience though. The night ended at the hotel bar Tayler and her mom were staying at. After a few drinks, we called it a night.
Yesterday I was kind of lazy. I slept in quite a bit, then helped Tayler get settled into the apartment. In the afternoon I navigated my way to Target all by myself and made it there and back in one piece. Even though I was almost attacked by some ferocious pigeons loitering outside the metro stop. Then I spent a couple hours sitting outside on our balcony reading and taking in the sounds of the city. A truly relaxing way to end my first weekend in DC.
